Breast Cancer Awareness Geocoin

Postby addisonbr » Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:08 am

NJ cacher and Metro friend mblatch passed this along, and I figured I'd reflect it here. It doesn't appear to me that the coin is trackable, but it seems like a nice idea / cause.

In 2004, my mom died of breast cancer and in 2008, I wanted to honor her in some way, so I walked in the San Francisco Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure, a 3-day 60 mile walk to fund raise and to raise awareness on breast cancer. Since that first walk, I have never looked back as it truly was a life changer when I was privileged to walk with so many focused, determined people who have a like goal to help find a cure for this deadly disease.

Several months ago, I made the commitment to walk in all fifteen 3-day events in 2011 for a total of 900 miles. On a given year, only one or two will attempt this do to the enormity of what it takes to pull it off, including fundraising and other logistics. To help with my fundraising, my daughter designed a beautiful trackable geocoin to honor my mom and others who have been affected by breast cancer.

The coin can be viewed at and is available for a $25 contribution, which includes postage in the United States, with international orders also taken for a slight increase to cover postage. A PayPal account is available at or I will take a check. I also have a matching pin that is available for $10 or $5 when purchased with a coin.

Where I could use your help is getting the word out to the geocaching community, letting others know what I'm trying to do. Provided I can raise the required funds, I plan to place one coin in a cache in every city I walk in so that 15 coins will be going around the country, hopefully raising some breast cancer awareness as it goes. Not only from a fundraising aspect but also from an awareness, I would love to have many more in circulation.

I have my story on the geocaching forum, but I firmly believe the best method is people telling people and that's where I would appreciate your help in posting my story on forums in your area. By contacting cachers in different areas of the country and asking for their assistance in posting my story on their local forums, I hope to spread my story on walking in all the events, but more importantly to raise funds and awareness to make a difference in finding a cure for breast cancer.

If you would like to read more about what I'm doing and why, please go to and my site will provide more details. All funds raised above the cost of the coin’s minting (roughly 80% goes to SGK) are sent directly to Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure for their usage in funding breast cancer research, awareness and assistance to those affected by this deadly disease.

Thank you for your time, consideration and I hope you wish to join me in making a difference in finding a cure for breast cancer..
