Wildlife in NYC

Postby gerkmax » Thu Dec 01, 2011 11:39 am

We all heard about the famous Central Park coyote. And we've all heard about other uncommon animal sightings, such as:

- a shark in the Gowanus Canal
- rabid raccoons have been spotted in Central Park and Queens
- rare ducks and seals along the Hudson
- bats in Riverside Park
- dolphins have are spotted every year in the East River
(Actually, Dolphin and Bear sightings in NYC/NJ are common)
- a bald eagles near Fairway (in Harlem)
- hawks are spotted all the time in the city
- baby goats in Brooklyn
- chicken escapes are fairly common in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan
- a bull (or two) have made a dash on to streets in Queens

Now, to add to the list, recently a whale was spotted in the Hudson, and a snowy owl was photographed around the Verrazano Bridge area.

And there are now deer on occasion in at least Van Cortlandt Park, though I've heard of some Staten Island sightings too, though I'm not sure how the deer got there from the "mainland". Ditto wild Turkeys in both.

Yup, I've seen plenty of deer all along the Hudson (both sides). Once had a great experience seeing about 20 deer coming through the fog all at once while caching in Untermyer Park in Yonkers.

gerk-

Good call! NYC wildlife is a very good thing, so thanks for bringing it to folk's attention. On a random note, the link to the owl was great, as it had an embedded video of that one owl getting scritched. Awesome. But better yet, that video led me to check out this one:

Random web videos rarely reach this level of awesomeness. A Japanese vampire owl? Yup. It may fit right in with NYC sewer alligators...
