We agree with addisonbr.
A while ago, we thought it would be cool to adopt 4qua5, and after jumping through a few hoops we made contact with the cache owner. He politely informed us that the original intention of geocaching was that caches should only remain alive as long as finders were respecting them enough to help maintain them. And if the sport of geocaching gets flooded with oportunistic players who simply sign logs to get numbers, then the more difficult caches should die out naturally.

With that said, we loved Concrete Rats unique containers and found them inspiring. We had hoped to adopt his containers more than his actual cache listings. The cache listings should die a natural death. We think we have negotiated a decent compromise in this case.

It seems to me that Titanic was ignored by NY Admin until someone wanted to place a cache nearby. Then they woke up and remembered to do some house keeping. I think we should be submitting hides based on how good they are, and if they conflict with another cache (at least in NYC) leave it to NY Admin to decide if they can be placed. In other words, don't let an abandoned cache stop you from submitting a new hide!

At the heart of this is a fundamental question: Do we, the cachers of NYC, collectively own the caches placed here? Or is each cache the individual property of the CO only?

Cachers tend to have a strong sense of collective ownership. As per EVF and Cache Ninja this was in the game from the start. We all take care, repair, help out on behalf of a temporarily absent CO, etc. The idea of collective ownership is a part of "the community of caching" that we have here.

However, game rules are that each CO alone is responsible for the caches placed - this is how groundspeak and the admins enforce game rules. Caches may be disabled by the admin, and archived - for non-communication - even if the cache is still there.

I don't know if we can change rules. One sensible suggestion that would help would be to allow organizations to "unilaterally adopt" caches they wanted to keep where the CO (say) left the game.

I like Nick's idea, as it helps to maintain the history of caching in NYC, as well as some very cool caches, active for current and future cachers. But As we see with Cache_Ninja, some cachers want their caches to "fade away". They prefer that we (local cachers) maintain it if we enjoy the cache. It's up to us to keep that cache from "going gently into that good night".

But having local caching organizations unofficially adopt/maintain a particular cache sounds like a great compromise.

PS... I'm STILL bummed about not being allowed to unarchive NYC Alpha! Even WITH the CO's request. GC9D! That's only TWO digits, after the "GC"! The FIRST cache in NYC! EVER! ARRRR!

Is there an appeal process? You may want to bounce a message off O'Reviewer just to find out if this is a universal polkicy or a local decision. Ben--you have your ear's on?

Getting back on topic, we have a plan to make sure that Concrete Rat is not completely forgotten, while providing some new caching experiences in his abandoned territory.

We just recycled an old Concrete Rat cache Container into a new Concrete Rat style geocache, at an old Concrete Rat geocache site.

What I do appreciate from folks is when they say..."cache is in good condition",or a simple heads up on a problem..not a long winded tirade about the 100 things wrong with a cache.

I see they posted another 'cache in trouble' disableon Concrete Rat. He hasn't been on line for almost a year and I fear all his caches will disappear.

Also glad to see Jake Bond is back. He didn't know about our Society but said he will follow up.
