Whatever happened to....

Checking some hides in Manhattan. I see Concrete Rat's caches are in trouble and that he hasn't logged on since June 08. Anyone know what happened?

Hmm. No hides or finds since mid-2007 and as you said hasn't logged in since mid-2008. It's always a bummer to see a cacher drop out of the game, but archiving his troubled hides and opening the area up to current cachers is probably the right thing to do.

true. But you could always count on him for the very clever camo on his hides.

Well, lots of cachers seem to come and go, given enough time, unfortunately. Up here, there was spoosh and OK Terrific (and to some extent worldsbesthomebiz, but I think he still caches occasionally). Also here in Westchester was biffgnar, not really active in forums, etc. and no cache hides, but you could count on him to hit area caches and sometime be an FTF. But I think he may be starting to vanish, I can't think of a time in our caching "career" (Aug. 2005 onward) that he's gone two months without logging onto the site like he has now. In an area of northeast PA that we visit often, there was this couple called frenchfrynfrosty, and they only began caching in 2006. Famous for challenging terrain on some cache hides, awesome camo on others, and for finding a lot of area caches late at night. I never thought they'd leave the game but they haven't done much in a long time (since August I think). And in addition to Concrete Rat in the boros, there's the famous "Cache Ninja" of Aqua5 fame, also SR/dboggny (their Pelham Parkway cache "We Were Here" was one of the first caches we found, very interesting container, but I think once they started to have kids they dropped from the game).

Things change, I guess some get bored with it after awhile, for others life changes in ways that affect being able to play the game, perceptually or otherwise. But I guess as long as someone's doing it and new people join caching moves on........things like Parenting Magazine mentioning the activity recently can only help.

The NY admin disabled one of Concrete Rat's caches today, "Where's the Grid", due to a "concerned geocacher" emailing him. There's nothing wrong with the cache. It was last found a few days ago, but the log was wet. The NY Admins using this as a chance to disable it if Concrete Rat doesn't respond. I feel it is unfair for the Admins to push caches into being archived.

Concrete Rat used to use his work email as his geocaching contact, he didn't have any other email. I have emailed him, I hope he responds.

Cache-ninja and I have corresponded extensively. He moved to Oregon around five years ago when he changed jobs. he no longer has much time for caching and caching in Oregon doesn't interest him as much as Urban NYC caching. He does still read the logs for his caches and occasionally responds.

Can we discuss this with NYAdmin if someone is willing to adopt the cache?

It's probably easier to just wait till it archives and replace it with one of your own in the same spot. (and give credit to Concrete Rat in the listing)

We tried adopting some of Concrete Rat's caches. Concrete Rat doesn't answer email, including the two year old work email address we had for him. NY Admin prefers that the caches quietly die and new caches with new owners replace them. We have proposed some possibilities...

Adoption is a one way deal: the cache owner must file a request that a particular geocacher adopt their cache. Then that user must agree to do so. The Admins will not do this for you if the cache owner has gone missing.
