Re: Whereigo

Speaking solely from my own little corner of geek-dom, I actually think this could be amazing. I love this kind of stuff. I solved Zork when I was a kid and then re-solved it on my Treo as an adult. I totally dig on puzzle hunts. Have designed two of them for the munchkins' school with another comin...

Five of Diamonds

Well, this isn't about one of "my" hides, but this seemed like the right forum (paulo - yes? no?). I just wanted to direct folks to an unexpectedly interesting cache in the Bronx. It's rather unloved - as of this morning it had been in place for over two months with just two smileys. Of al...

Re: Whereigo

Follow-up, I think I found the link: http://eventful.com/performers/wherigo-gaming-experience/create-a-wherigocom-gaming-experience-/P0-001-000095162-4 Some of my initial enthusiasm for the Wherigo concept has definitely worn off in the last day or two as I've looked a little closer. I haven't seen ...

Re: GPSr and Software Help

I have a question for those versed in the backcountry dialect of Garmin. It's a problem that I believe mostly affects city cachers. I use a 60CSx, and one of my biggest problems with it is zooming in on an cache area in the city and getting overwhelmed by nonsense icons showing me where I can get a ...

Re: Must Have Free PC Software

Interesting that half of that list either currently or at one time could be downloaded in a bundle as part of the "Google Pack" (Trillian doesn't appear to be a part of their "pack" now, but it used to be). http://pack.google.com/ To that list I would add Google Earth (also avail...

Re: Cache Stats?

I can see how a peer rating system would have some promise in general. Especially if you could perform refined searches for caches that achieve certain rating criteria; when going on vacation it would be nice to search not just on location and difficulty but also on awesomeness. I don't know much ab...

Puzzles Anyone?

A new Manhattan puzzle cache is coming down the pike... I'm submitting it for approval in a few minutes; depending on the back-and-forth with NY Admin (and NY Admin's schedule) it should show up in a day or two. Your sneak peak for being a part of the NY Metro Area GC Society is that it's a subway t...

Bridges, "Rock and Roll" (GC19FHX), "Handy Relief" (GC19NF1)

Not sure how many of you saw this - it looks like there is an issue with a couple of new caches that fats277 placed a couple of weeks ago, Rock and Roll and Handy Relief . It appears that they are on bridges crossing the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. This was the message that NY Admin posted on each ca...

Re: Bridges, "Rock and Roll" (GC19FHX), "Handy Relief" (GC19NF1)

One reason the local reviewer system works well for geocaching is that different regions of the country have different concerns. If New York authorities are skittish about geocaches on bridges, even relatively minor bridges, I think we and the New York Admin have a lot to gain by respecting that. I ...

Re: Bridges, "Rock and Roll" (GC19FHX), "Handy Relief" (GC19NF1)

Central Park is geocache friendly. The Director of Operations in March 2005 asked that no listings be allowed in Strawberry Fields because that area is particularly sensitive, but was supportive of responsibly maintained caches in other areas of the park. (I got this information from New York Admin ...

Military Containers and Geocaching in NYC

Unfortunately, it appears that the homemade bomb in Times Square yesterday morning was made with the geocacher's old friend, the ammo can: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/07/nyregion/07bicycle.html?ref=nyregion This time, the explosives were packed in a metal ammunition box, the kind that can be boug...

Re: New Puzzle cache

Every time I finish a puzzle, I always think it will take at least a day or two to solve, but you guys are too good now. Ha, you are one to talk! I worked on New World Cache for weeks, and then you logged it three hours after publication. I was truly the saddest boy in the world. My wife took this ...

greyhoundlawyer is leaving us!

I noticed today that several of greyhoundlawyer's caches have been adopted, and after digging a little deeper I saw from some of his logs that he is moving. Our loss is DC's gain. Many of my earliest finds were greyhoundlawyer caches on the Upper West Side and in Central Park, and his nose for good ...
